Chunky Neck Wrap

For your very first project we’re going to crochet something that doesn’t require you to follow a complicated, rigid pattern. This will allow you to practice crocheting and get used to holding your hook, tensioning your yarn and perfecting your first crochet stitch – double crochet.

Choose a yarn you like – for scarves and wraps like this a chunky yarn is a great choice PLUS it crochets up much quicker than a finer yarn. Pick a hook size to match your yarn for a chunky yarn like this we used a size 5mm hook.

Chain 20 stitches to start with (ch20)– the thickness of your yarn will determine the size of the chain, and therefore the width of your neck wrap. Hold the chain length against you – is it as wide as you would like your wrap to be? If not, chain more stitches.

Then simply continue to work double crochet along each row, until the wrap is the required length – check regularly by holding against you.

Don’t forget your ‘turning chain’ for double crochet – chain 1 at the beginning of each new row.

Sew in a hidden press-stud or pieces of Velcro/hook‘n’loop to hold the wrap in place when wearing. You could even sew on a decorative button to give the impression of a buttonhole!

If the above were a standard pattern it could look like this:

Using a 5mm hook and chunky yarn, ch20.

Row 1: Ch1, dc to the end, turn.

Rep this row until the wrap/scarf is desired length. Fasten off yarn.
